IYC BILLE CLAN TO PARTNER DELGA COUNCIL IN ENGENDERING SUSTAINABLE PEACE IN THE AREA.
The Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Tony Philmoore, PhD, has pledged to partner the Ijaw Youth Congress, IYC, in engendering sustainable peace and meaningful development in Degema Local Government Area.
The chairman made his position known on 30-Oct-2018 while receiving the executives of IYC Bille clan in his office.
Dr. Philmoore advised Ijaw youths, especially members of the Ijaw Youth Council, to participate actively in securing Ijawland while watching out for early signs of conflict and resolving them before they conflagrate.
He said it was sad that rather than being the solution, Ijaw youths allow themselves to become part of the problem, allowing outsiders to penetrate their ranks and use them to unsettle their communities and cause bodily harm to fellow Ijaws they were supposed to protect.
The council boss decried the reversal of fortune for Ijaws generally and lamented a situation whereby natural resources like oil and gas deposited in their soil that should be a blessing had become a curse to them, bringing hardship, environmental pollution, wars, conflicts and unnecessary rivalry in the area.
He therefore thanked IYC Bille clan for the visit and advised them to be part of the peace process between Bille and Ke currently being midwifed by the council while promising to incorporate some of their members in the security surveillance and patrol of the waterways being funded by the local government.
Dr. Philmoore also promised to organize other activities like schools quiz and sports for the benefit of youths in Degema Local Government Area.
Earlier, while committing to partner the council boss on behalf of his executives on his peace initiatives and other programmes beneficial to the people of Degema Local Government Area, chairman of Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, Bille Clan, Garrick Ibimina Firstbury, thanked the chairman for receiving them graciously and appealed to him to set aside funds for education for the benefit of indigent students as well as a scholarship board that will oversee the granting of scholarships for deserving students in the local government area.
